How do we protect minors from exposure of alcohol marketing?

The effects of alcohol advertising and marketing on drinking behavior of young people has been more and more extensively studied over the past few years. Evidence is clear that especially exposure to large volumes of alcohol advertising has an undesirable impact on the drinking behavior of young people. The research show that young people have an earlier onset of first consuming alcohol if that person have been exposed to alcohol advertisements.

Alcohol is the third biggest killer in the EU, it is higher than tobacco. Young people and minors are also over represented in this category. As an example, young people make up 35% of drink driving death but only around 7% of the drivers on our roads.

Marketing alcohol on broadcasting media today is almost without EU regulation – the Audio Visual Media Service Directive (AVMSD) that regulate, amongst others, alcohol commercials is so badly written that there is in fact no protection of minors. This have been used by the advertisers and alcohol industry.

Now the AVMSD is being revised and we want to make sure that minors and young people can watch TV without being exposed to damaging images.

To discuss this Linnéa Engström a Swedish MEP are hosting an event on the 31st in the European parliament.

Speakers are:

David Jernigan:

PaD, Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. David have years of research on how we are affected by alcohol commercials and its impact on our daily life.

Irma Kilim:

Is European officer at IOGT-NTO. IOGT-NTO is a 135 year old organization combating the problems alcohol create within society. Irma will speak more about the AVMSD and its flaws and further on how we can make it better.

Damian and Ioana:

Will speak for ACTIVE and talk about a project that ACTIVE have been a part of in recent months. Zoom in Media is a project to show how much alcohol commercial minors see every day. The project have been made up by minors downloading an application to their phone and then talking photos thru the app and then the pictures have been gather in a database. Now Damian and Iona will talk about the result of the project.

Amandine Garde:

Is a professor in European law at the Manchester University. She has a long and accomplished background of law within the European Union and she will talk us true the possibilities and difficulty’s with establishing new laws within the union. How much is actually possible to regulate on an EU level? Can we do more then what the commission have proposed? These are questions that Amandine will take us thru.

With regards to this, don’t miss our event in the EP on the AVMSD!How do we protect minors from exposure of alcohol marketing (Picture
