The effects of alcohol advertising and marketing on drinking behavior of young people has been more and more extensively studied over the past few years. Evidence is clear that especially exposure to large volumes of alcohol advertising has an undesirable impact on the drinking behavior of young people. The research show that young people have an earlier onset of first consuming alcohol if that person have been exposed to alcohol advertisements.
Alcohol is the third biggest killer in the EU, it is higher than tobacco. Young people and minors are also over represented in this category. As an example, young people make up 35% of drink driving death but only around 7% of the drivers on our roads.
Marketing alcohol on broadcasting media today is almost without EU regulation – the Audio Visual Media Service Directive (AVMSD) that regulate, amongst others, alcohol commercials is so badly written that there is in fact no protection of minors. This have been used by the advertisers and alcohol industry.
Now the AVMSD is being revised and we want to make sure that minors and young people can watch TV without being exposed to damaging images.
